How Improved Differential Diagnosis and Teamwork Can Help Clients Get the Right Care

Hot Potato! Improved Differential Diagnosis and Teamwork

Date:
Wednesday, October 18, 2023

Time:
11:00 am-1:00 pm PST

Summary:

For many of us, “hot potato” is a childhood game (full of nostalgia), where a group of children sit in a circle passing the “potato” around the circle while music plays. When the music stops, whoever is holding the potato loses, and the last person standing wins. So the best way to win the game is to recognize that the “potato” is “hot” and toss it to the person next to you as quickly as possible. In clinical practice, sometimes clients can feel like the “hot potato” as they are passed around between providers. This often happens to clients suffering from obsessive-compulsive and related disorders. This presentation will help attendees better utilize differential diagnosis skills, case management, and teamwork to navigate tricky clinical situations that often lead to clinical “hot potato.”

Learning Objectives:
Attendees will be able to:
• Increase their own awareness of when they are engaged in a game of clinical “hot potato.”
• Utilize differential diagnosis skills to navigate comorbidity and complicated symptom presentations.
• Identify when to refer out and when to join forces with outside providers.
• Communicate with multidisciplinary treatment teams, through a clear case conceptualization.
