Reviews of everything from arts events to consumer products used to be primarily written by journalists. You might agree or disagree with a judgment of a writer, but their opinion was almost certainly going to reach more people than yours would.
These days, however, all of us can review almost anything. Here, for example, is a detailed review of women’s ankle socks:
So, they were not kidding when they said these are thin. I’m so used to thick socks but the brand I was buying was starting to wear out after only a few wears/washes. I decided to look for something new. When I received these, I thought they would be too thin for me. But since I’m in Florida and it’s summer, they are comfortable and don’t make my feet hot. They are soft and do stay in place. I only received them a few days ago so we’ll see how they hold up but I like them so far. Might buy more.
A month after posting that review, the customer would return to the page to add another full paragraph to their thoughts on the socks (we’ll spare you that additional deep dive). The writer did give the socks three out of five stars.
It’s an open question as to whether or not this sort of review is useful when folks are making sock-buying decisions.
