In the demanding and high-stress world of first responders, Veterans, and active military personnel, the incidence of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and addiction to drugs or alcohol is higher than in the general population. The unique challenges and traumatic experiences faced by the individuals in these professions can leave lasting scars, both psychological and emotional. Addressing these issues requires specialized approaches that respect the unique contexts of their service. Tactical Recovery provides a path forward for those struggling with PTSD and addiction.
Understanding PTSD and Addiction in High-Stress Professions
People in professions with high levels of stress and trauma, such as active military, Veterans, and first responders, carry a greater risk for the development of PTSD and substance use disorders (SUD) due to their frequent and intense exposure to traumatic events. Following exposure to traumatic events, individuals may experience prolonged periods of psychological distress, which severely impact their ability to function both professionally and personally. This issue is often compounded by the use of drugs or alcohol as a coping mechanism. This form of self-medicating can quickly spiral into addiction, creating co-occurring disorders.
What is Tactical Recovery?
Tactical Recovery is a residential, multifaceted intervention program designed to meet the distinctive needs of Veterans, active military members, and first responders struggling with a substance use disorder or mental health issue, including PTSD, depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, borderline personality disorder, or co-occurring disorders. Tactical Recovery is tailored to each individual, focusing on their specific needs, concerns, and complications.
Tactical Recovery at Canyon Vista Recovery Center
Offered at Canyon Vista Recovery Center in Mesa, Arizona, Tactical Recovery includes a complete evaluation, detoxification from alcohol, benzos, and opiates with 24-hour nursing care and staffing, comprehensive mental health diagnosis, and treatment. Tactical Recovery also includes family support, involvement in the treatment process, and education on topics such as boundaries, codependency, self-care, and the 12 Steps.
Once an individual completes their Residential Tactical Recovery Treatment Program, the staff at Canyon Vista will coordinate their aftercare plan. To effectively support and engage with Veterans, active-duty military service members, first responders, and their families, the clinicians at Canyon Vista have completed certification courses about Veteran-specific topics and military culture from PsychArmor. Throughout treatment, trained Veterans provide therapeutic oversight.
Tactical Recovery Includes Trauma Therapy
A form of psychotherapy, trauma therapy helps people with the impact traumatic events have had on their lives. Trauma therapy helps individuals process frightening, life-threatening, dangerous, or abusive experiences that cause PTSD. Trauma therapies are evidence-based treatments and include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), prolonged exposure (PE), cognitive processing therapy (CPT), and eye movement desensitization, and reprocessing (EMDR).
At Canyon Vista Recovery Center, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is included in Tactical Recovery programs. CBT focuses on the relationship between the individual’s feelings, thoughts, and behaviors. Working with a trauma-focused therapist, the individual will come to understand how to process their thoughts about the traumatic events and better direct themselves toward a more positive and affirming outlook.
Holistic Therapy and Tactical Recovery
Holistic therapy addresses an individual as a whole. Unlike traditional therapy, which generally focuses primarily on psychological health, holistic therapy considers the interconnectedness of the mind, body, and spirit in seeking wellness and healing. At Canyon Vista, Tactical Recovery includes holistic therapies such as music or art therapy, yoga, mindfulness meditation, and equine therapy.
