Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

Overcoming Addiction with Flexible, Effective Intensive Outpatient Care

Canyon Vista is proud to offer an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for substance use and addiction treatment. For many of our clients, completing residential/inpatient treatment at our campus is just the beginning of a long-term commitment to recovery. Transitioning back to the work and home environment after a month in full-time treatment can be a little jarring, even with the aftercare support we offer. This is where an IOP can help. Our IOP for adults offers counseling and education several days a week to help participants integrate their recovery into their daily lives.

Our IOP offers a more flexible, less intensive approach than inpatient or residential programs, while still providing structured support. It is designed for individuals who need ongoing support in their recovery but do not require 24-hour supervision. Unlike residential treatment, our IOP allows clients to live at home and continue to meet daily work and life responsibilities while receiving treatment for substance use and mental health disorders. It also cost less than residential treatment. And, because you return home each evening, you can immediately practice the coping skills and strategies you’re learning in real-life settings like work or school.

Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOPs) can be an option in your recovery.

What makes Canyon Vista's IOP different:

Canyon Vista’s outpatient programs represent a commitment to the highest standards of excellence in outpatient care. Our outpatient location is a healing environment, meticulously designed as a trauma-informed space, intentionally crafted to provide a sense of safety, respect, community, and dignity. With views of nature, varied lighting strategies, and design elements that consciously combat the sterility of traditional institutional settings, our spaces promote comfort and healing. The use of color psychology further enhances the therapeutic environment, fostering a sense of well-being. We prioritize autonomy and control, empowering individuals to balance their personal choices with the comfort and support that our programs provide.

  • Flexible Scheduling: IOPs typically allow individuals to attend treatment sessions in the mornings, evenings, or weekends, which allows them to maintain work, school, or family commitments. Our program is currently offered in the evenings, but we may expand that to meet the needs of our clients so be sure to ask when you call us.
  • Group and Individual Therapy: Patients participate in both group and individual therapy sessions. Group therapy offers peer support, while individual therapy addresses personal issues and treatment goals.
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): This highly effective therapeutic approach, focuses on identifying and changing negative thought patterns and behaviors that contribute to substance use. It helps individuals develop healthier ways to cope with stress, cravings, and triggers that can lead to relapse.
  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT): This is another effective therapeutic approach used in addiction recovery. Originally developed to treat borderline personality disorder, DBT has been adapted for substance use treatment because of its focus on managing intense emotions, building resilience, and improving relationships.

  • Education and Skills Development: Programs often include educational sessions on addiction, relapse prevention, coping strategies, and life skills to support long-term recovery.

  • Duration and Frequency: IOPs generally involve multiple sessions each week, with a typical duration of 8-12 weeks, although this can vary based on individual needs. Our program meets three times a week in the evenings, allowing clients to go to work and/or school during the day.
  • Family Involvement: Family counseling or support groups are often encouraged as family dynamics can play a crucial role in recovery.
  • Focus on Relapse Prevention: Since patients are not in a controlled environment 24/7, IOPs place a strong emphasis on relapse prevention strategies and developing a supportive social network.

Our IOP Schedule:

Canyon Vista’s Intensive Outpatient Program takes place Monday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings from 5:30 to 8:30 pm.

Insurance Participation:

Canyon Vista’s Intensive Outpatient Program is In-Network with most commercial policies and select AHCCCS (Medicaid) policies.

Is our IOP right for you or your loved one?

That’s a good question. If you or your loved one meet the following criteria, there’s a good chance you’ll do well in our program:

  • You have completed residential treatment with Canyon Vista or another facility and are looking for a way to continue treatment as you transition back to your home environment.

OR:

  • You have not been using substances for a long time or in high amounts.
  • You are not in a pattern of trying and failing to stop using substances on your own.
  • You have not experienced severe medical issues due to your substance use.
  • You do not have an undiagnosed mental health disorder.
  • You have a supportive home environment.
  • You have access to community resources, healthcare providers, and other professionals who can help support continued recovery.
  • You live and work in an area that does not present you with intense and constant triggers to use substances.
  • You have work or family obligations that do not allow you to leave home for an extended period of time.
  • Your insurance does not cover inpatient treatment and you cannot afford to pay for it out of pocket.

The bottom line: To succeed in intensive outpatient programming, you or your loved one will need the motivation to attend all of the IOP sessions, a strong desire to commit to your goals for recovery, and the ability to learn new coping skills and apply them in your daily life.
