Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) in Arizona

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) in Arizona

Canyon Vista is proud to offer an intensive outpatient program for substance use and addiction treatment. For many of our clients, completing residential/inpatient treatment at our campus is just the beginning of a long-term commitment to recovery.

Transitioning back to the work and home environment after a month spent in full-time treatment can feel a little jarring, even with the aftercare support we offer. This is where an IOP can help. Our IOP for adults offers counseling and education several days a week to help participants integrate their recovery into their daily lives.

Our Phoenix Intensive Outpatient Program

Who We Help

Our IOP offers many advantages. Unlike residential treatment, IOPs allow clients to live at home and continue to meet daily work and life responsibilities while receiving treatment for substance use and mental health disorders. They also cost less than residential treatment. And, because you return home each evening, you can immediately practice the coping skills and strategies you’re learning in real-life settings like work or school.

But is our IOP the right fit for you or your loved one? That’s a good question. If you or your loved one meet the following criteria, there’s a good chance you’ll do well in our program:

  • You have completed residential treatment with Canyon Vista or another facility and are looking for a way to continue treatment as you transition back to your home environment.

OR:

  • You have not been using substances for a long time or in high amounts.
  • You are not in a pattern of trying and failing to stop using substances on your own.
  • You have not experienced severe medical issues due to your substance use.
  • You do not have an undiagnosed mental health disorder.
  • You have a supportive home environment.
  • You have access to community resources, healthcare providers, and other professionals who can help support continued recovery.
  • You live and work in an area that does not present you with intense and constant triggers to use substances.
  • You have work or family obligations that do not allow you to leave home for an extended period of time.
  • Your insurance does not cover inpatient treatment and you cannot afford to pay for it out of pocket.

The bottom line: To succeed in intensive outpatient programming, you or your loved one will need the motivation to attend all of the IOP sessions, a strong desire to commit to your goals for recovery, and the ability to learn new coping skills and apply them in your daily life.

If you still aren’t sure whether IOP addiction treatment in Phoenix, AZ, is right for you, contact our admissions counselors. They will ask questions to learn more about your specific situation and connect you with our medical and psychiatric team for a confidential, no-cost assessment to determine the treatment path that will best fit your needs.

How We Help

Our IOP offers many of the same treatment modalities as our residential program, albeit on a less time-intensive scale. Group therapy and education make up the bulk of the program. Individual and family counseling are also offered, as well as life skills and relapse prevention training. Let’s take a closer look.

  • Group therapy. Proven just as effective as individual therapy, group therapy allows clients the opportunity to meet and learn from others who are undergoing similar struggles. A certified therapist guides the small-group sessions to help clients examine what triggers their addiction, how addiction has affected their relationships and personal growth, and how to manage the stressors that spark cravings for substance use.
  • Psychoeducation. At least a quarter of those who struggle with substance use disorder also have a mental health disorder. Depression, anxiety, PTSD, bipolar, and schizophrenia are some common mental health issues that can exacerbate addiction and make it very difficult to recover. Our IOP works with clients who have mental health diagnosis to help them understand and recognize their symptoms and how they overlap with and worsen symptoms of addiction. Clients learn how to best manage their mental health symptoms with medication (as needed), therapy, and self-care.
  • Individual therapy. Each client will be assigned a therapist for individual sessions that take place outside of the IOP schedule. Individual therapy gives clients a chance to delve more deeply into their personal addiction and mental health triggers than group therapy allows. Our therapists pull from a variety of modalities, including cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and motivational interviewing.
  • Family healing. Addiction impacts the entire family unit. All of our IOP clients will have the opportunity to invite family members to participate in their individual therapy sessions. These sessions help families learn to communicate effectively, set boundaries with compassion, and support each other as the whole family recovers from the strain of addiction.
  • Life skills. Many people who suffer from addiction and co-occurring disorders have forgotten how to take care of themselves. Group educational sessions teach IOP clients how to effectively navigate the challenges and demands of daily life. Clients learn how to set goals, shop, cook, deal with stress, interact with others, and more.
  • Relapse Prevention. Integrated into each aspect of IOP Arizona treatment is relapse prevention. As clients learn about themselves and their triggers, they will begin to make a plan for how they will stay committed to long-term sobriety. They will learn to connect with the recovery community, stay engaged in therapy as needed after treatment ends, and manage the big and the small stressors life brings. They’ll also learn how to recognize an impending relapse and what to do if they relapse.

Perhaps the most important benefit of joining Canyon Vista’s intensive outpatient program in Phoenix, AZ, is meeting fellow participants. Friendships with others who understand where you’ve been and share your commitment to long-term recovery are crucial to sobriety. There’s every chance that the people you meet at Canyon Vista will become life-long friends.
